Butterflies and flowers highlight the sensory garden in the patio area of the Ellen Noel Art Museum. Just as butterflies emerged from cocoons, so did the garden emerge with the help of the Permian Basin Master Gardeners.
Members of the Art Museum Board of Directors asked the Master Gardeners to plan and plant the garden. The local gardening group, which is sponsored by The Texas Agricultural Extension Service, agreed to build a garden with many sensory and tactile plants. These types of plants are grown for all visitors, but especially for the sight impaired and the physically handicapped.
The sensory garden, which is open to the public, is also full of color and fragrance.
Audio tapes, describing the garden, are available for visitors. The tapes have been made courtesy of Sandy Davis of the Recording Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
Signage, identifying the various plants, has been made possible courtesy of Stemarco Company of Odessa.
The Permian Basin Master Gardeners are pleased to have a part in the sensory garden at the Ellen Noel Art Museum.
